Spotlight on Women in Tech: Anna Strupiechowska of ANNS1

  • At License Dashboard we are, and always have been passionate about creating and maintaining a diverse place of work. One of our employees has been working with the Women in Technology Community by building a space where women can support each other, share advice and work to narrow the gender gap.

We asked some esteemed women within the IT industry to tell us a bit about their experiences within the workplace. Here’s what Anna Strupiechowska of ANNS1 said:

When did you first start in the IT industry and what drew you to it?

My IT journey started 12 years ago after moving from the FMCG sector. I was inspired by technology, how fast it changes and its huge impact on business, environment and the world.

As a woman, have you faced any challenges within working environments?

I had a huge privilege to work for the true leaders who believed in me and gave me opportunity to grow, learn the IT world and show that FMCG interdisciplinary mind may be an advantage within projects.

It’s now well known that a lot of industries have been highlighted due to pay gaps between men and women, do you think this is the same within the IT industry?

It may be true but I didn’t notice in my own experience. I was treated in the same way with the same KPI’s and gaps. Some IT industry leaders such as Microsoft or Dell are paying a lot of attention to the equal work & pay environment, no matter the gender so it may still be an issue which some companies are addressing.

In recent years there has been an influx of women in all workplaces, but it’s not equal to men, men are 30% more likely to be promoted to a managerial position than women. Why do you think this is and what can organizations do to prevent discrimination and maintain equality when looking at hiring, salaries and promotions?

I can’t speak for the past but now every organization of today who wants to be perceived as a leader, see that diversity generates higher profits, makes work environment more competitive, and innovative and more attractive overall.

What resources and support are available for women in IT?

There are global and local programs dedicated to woman (but not only) as for exemple; Coursera – Grow Your Business with Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women, Tech Summit for Women, dedicated conferences- there is plenty to choose from.

What’s the biggest lesson you have learnt as a women in the IT industry?

Being an entrepreneur in IT shows that there is always an opportunity to take, and every situation may be an advantage when we look at it from the right perspective.

What is your favourite part of working in the IT industry?

I adore my meetings with customer and love listen to them; there is so much to learn from and to hear about sector specificity and the daily challenges they are facing.

What’s the biggest professional challenge you have faced and how did you overcome it?

I still believe this part of my IT journey is ahead of me.

Do you have any advice or words of wisdom to women starting out in the IT industry?

The advice I heard from a women within the financial sector, at a CIO position; “women have to believe in themselves as they are the biggest obstacle in their own development”.
